In 1998, my culinary journey started in the classroom. Fresh out of university I started teaching in a program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A major component of the curriculum was daily living skills, including basic meal preparation. Working together with staff and parents we created a daily lunch program that encouraged children to try new healthy foods. 11 years later, the program had grown into 16 classrooms throughout the city of Calgary.
Mike and I love to cook. We take on the challenge of learning how to cook really food from scratch. Our evenings are making home pepperoni, sauage, and processing 1000 lbs of tomatoes for pasta sauce. The kitchen is the centre of our family and home. We have 4 amazing children that are involved in sports. We have supported our boys from Timbits to presently our oldest plays in the WHL. I believe in giving the best in what I can control, healthy meals and snacks. Our girls alpine ski race and we are in the mountains almost every weekend throughout the winter. Again, supplying the best health meals and snacks while they are on the hill is my goal. When everyone is home makes my heart so happy and we open our house to all our friends and family. Big meals are normal in our house!
Game Day Meals started by Mike and I bringing Crockpots on sporting trips. We did not want to sit in a chain restaurant and eat out. Our kids complained about feeling heavy and gross after a weekend competition. We got organized and started prepping soups, stew and other meals in the crockpot. During the Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament we had a mini kitchen that served all of us for the 10 days we were in Edmonton. I realized there is a missing part of the sporting life, healthy meals on the road. Mike and I have participated in BBQ competitions in past years and have the background and equipment to create and serve large groups with ease.
